Night Rainbow

Paper size 6 X 6, image size 5 x 5. Unsigned Lithograph on Watercolor Paper, 1972

Thom designed a line of open faced card art with envelopes. Color Craft was our Printer in New York City, they had printed Thom’s Rainbow Mobil Card and “Santa Clause Is Coming To Town” card for the Museum of Modern Art. At that time lithograph printing was very costly, we had joked that it was the cost of a home. Prior to that time we had black and white silk screen with hand colored rainbows by Thom so this would bring the cost of purchases down.

We reopened the Rainbow Shop in Provincetown in the spring of 1972. Our gallery was at the end of a yellow brick road off Commercial Street. To attract attention Thom painted an exact copy of the Night Rainbow on the outside wall of our building. It was spectacular, however the Town Councilmen and women came to us and requested it be removed saying it looked like we did Tarot card readings. To ease tensions, we removed the painting. Thom painted a freestanding cloud and a rainbow and put them behind a bench in front of the wall so people could sit beneath a rainbow and take pictures.

The image of the night rainbow will always be in my mind. The colors, the graphic design lives forever in its power and simplicity. It is as beautiful today as it was in 1972. It is easy to frame, mat or just enjoy as an art card collectable keepsake.
